"'Espero tua (re) volta' breaks with conventional narrative structures to show how the young protagonists live in an incomparably rousing way of solidarity and democratic values, self-confidently articulate their goals and dreams - while always one step ahead of the adults. The film gives hope and inspires intergenerational to raise one's voice and stand up for our fundamental rights." - Amnesty International Award Jury

  • Set during recent political turmoil in Brazil, this essential exposé of radical student activism and its livid expressions of resistance offers a street-level view of Brazil's politically-animated generation and its revolt against a corrosive far- right hegemony.
Following a severe socio-political crisis, a large number of schools in São Paulo were slated to be closed, evoking the anger of students across the country. Using social-media to ignite an immediate, sweeping reaction, the students took to the streets in demand of education for all, eventually occupying more than a thousand public buildings in an unprecedented act of self-empowerment. Soon enough, a dramatic cascade of socio-political upheavals has shifted the course of Brazil's faltering democracy towards further disarray.
Tapping into the fiery sentiment behind these raw and ultimately effectual protests, Eliza Campai's award-winning documentary charts the initial demonstrations in 2013 all the way to the election of the extreme right-wing Jair Bolsonaro in 2018, and captures
the experiences, passions, and fears of these highly-engaged Brazilian teenagers.
By offering real-time encounters with young activists during times of national disarray, this visceral documentary offers a timely depiction of a rising and globally symbiotic movement and its relentless machinations of revolt.
93 minutes - Portuguese with English subtitles.
    Directed by: Eliza Capai
