On the brink of the Syrian uprising, in the refugee camp of Yarmouk, the Shebabs, a young close-knit collective of third-generation Palestinian refugees, are preparing for a future of profound uncertainty. Now facing adulthood, they possess a genuine thirst for life in constant confrontation with the harsh realities of the camp and their own sense of rootlessness. Between the inherent need for freedom and the connection to a group, between the longing for revolt and the prospect of a well-ordered life, choices prove challenging; even more so for the young refugees in the camp of Yarmouk, in the disorienting time leading up to the Syrian civil war.
"The Shebabs of Yarmouk" is a poignant lament for the lost youth of Yarmouk, captured beautifully with a subtle sense of longing. Following the events depicted in the film, life in the camp began to erode drastically. With conflicts between rebel and regime forces eventually leaving the camp in ruin, its surviving inhabitants are wandering the world as perpetual refugees.
