"[Sea Tomorrow] is all about conveying meaning through specific settings – a break at work between colleagues, a chimney that doesn’t fit through the gate, or even the tanned and wrinkled face of a farmer. In the end, [the camera work] reveals that the beauty of life can be found beneath each and every stone we choose to turn." – Locarno Film Festival Critics Week

This beautiful exploration of the aftermath of a man-made environmental disaster in contemporary Kazakhstan focuses on a resilient people facing the challenge with a newfound sense of hope.
Sea Tomorrow focuses on life near the northern Aral sea, in Aralsk, Kazakhstan. A former port, the people have become disconnected with their own past. Young adults rehearse choreography for an annual sea festival even though the “adjacent” body of water is now miles away. While prior generations spent half their lives at sea, Aralsk children don’t know how to swim (if they do learn, it’s in a giant indoor pool). Boats are stranded in dry deserts as men go to them and strip them for scrap metal.
Yet despite such devastation, there is an atmosphere of cheerfulness in the town. After a dam was built between the north and south Aral seas, and adjustments were made to one of the rivers, the water has started to return, and with it fish—and hope. An old man had planted a garden that is now thriving. Young people give old boats a new paint job with the expectation that perhaps they’ll be able to use them again in the future. With gorgeous sunny days on full display in almost every shot, Sea Tomorrow showcases a landscape devastated but also, one on the cusp of renewal.
88 Minutes | Russian and Kazakh with English subtitles.
