'Shows the absurd excesses and exposes the false promises of the Spanish real estate crisis' – The Goethe Institute

When the real estate bubble burst in 2007 and the worst financial crisis in nearly a century began, by some measures, no country was hit harder than Spain.  Leading up to this point, lax credit policies and skyrocketing demand had fueled a heady period of speculative real estate development.  Vacation homes were built by the hundreds of thousands, massive development sites like the “Las Vegas of Madrid” were begun, and airports were built without any planned flight traffic.  After the crash, more then 3 million homes lay vacant in a country of 47 million people, as an epidemic of homelessness and unemployment set in.  Many people resorted to squatting in abandoned or half-finished homes.  "Houses for All" explores the remains of these suburban wastelands, some of the hubris that led to the crash, and the inhumanities that ultimately followed.
