This compelling account follows a group of therapeutic clowns in a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos to reflect on the emotional undercurrents of the refugee experience, and the precarious state of children in times of displacement.

Once a refugee herself during the Lebanese Civil War, filmmaker Cynthia Choucair and her family settled in Greece.  With this formative experience, and inspired by the recent refugee crisis, her sister decided to become a professional clown and volunteer with Clowns Without Borders, a global organization wholly dedicated to lifting the spirits of refugee children.  Choucair follows her sister and the organization to the Greek island of Lesbos, where refugee children from the Syrian Civil War and other conflicts have been left stranded with a profound need for solace.  Despite the good intentions of their humanitarian cause, the volunteers soon discover themselves in limbo between disaffected local authorities and the leaden bureaucracy of the European Union.  As the volunteers' frustration grows, the siblings turn their gaze inwards and delve back into their own history of displacement, as tender-age victims of the Lebanese Civil War.  With a breadth of first-hand insight and experience, Counting Tiles offers a subtle survey of the emotional and psychological states and needs of refugee children.
