This visually stunning film tells a story of compassion and displacement.  [It] depicts the global refugee crisis from a perspective of longevity; while the two young men survived a dangerous journey across the sea, efforts to assimilate into a new culture pose a more difficult challenge."
– OpenCanada

"There are numerous reports on Lampedusa in recent years, and [this film] is a genuine supplement because it treats its subjects with respect, and looks beyond the statistics." – De Standaard

"[The film] gets to the heart of the matter without using big words.  It tells the story of its central figures amidst the circumstances through striking observations of their everyday lives." – De Tijd

The Italian island of Lampedusa has increasingly become a rescue point for migrants and refugees seeking a gateway into Europe.  Omar, a refugee who fled Tunisia during the Arab Spring, was taken in by a doctor and set up with a job as an interpreter in the local center for refugees.  Adam, a young migrant from Ghana, was taken in by a hotel operator and works as a valet.  As each immigrant learns and assimilates, each begins to have desires like any other Lampedusiani youth, but their foreignness remains central to their identities.

Amidst Europe's ongoing refugee crisis, and the Lampedusiani's admirable efforts to bear more than their share of the burden, the island can feel like both a sanctuary and a small town to escape from.  "No Man is an Island" is a perceptive portrait that illuminates the refugee experience and its contradictions.

2016, 70 minutes, in Italian, Arabic, and Akan with English subtitles.
