The 1962 hanging of Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann was Israel's first and only execution. This conscious, introspective documentary paints a fascinating portrait of Eichmann's executioner; a marginalized Sephardi prison warden whose life was forever altered by reluctantly carrying out this monumental task.
The life of Shalom, the hangman of Adolf Eichmann, encapsulates the story of the Jewish state from the perspective of the "other"- the marginalized Sephardi prison warden who is chosen to do the dirty work of hanging the arch-enemy, thereby carrying out a national burden that had dramatically shaped his life. His current profession in the abattoir as an Orthodox ritual slaughterer and his vivid recollections from his past constructs a fascinating, multilayered portrait of an individual who improbably finds himself playing a role in the midst of historical events.
Shalom's idiosyncratic, yet unheard story emanates from the very edge of Israel's historical narrative to reveal insights through an unusual perspective. His clear, alternative voice from the margins of society ultimately carries a deeply humanistic, remarkably universal message.
