IDFA INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL AMSTERDAM
VISIONS DU RÉEL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
"In making this personal film, Peter Entell loses and finds himself, prompting a fundamental reflection on a tragedy in our time." –
"A personal yet sincere portrayal of a terribly deep-rooted tragedy." – Cineuropa
A century ago, the Jewish grandparents of film director Peter Entell fled the persecution and pogroms of Ukraine, a land torn apart by war and massacres, and found refuge in the United States. Returning in 2016 to seek out the village of his ancestors, Entell finds himself in the middle of a war.
He finds that people continue to kill in the name of the mother country, flag, culture, and religion. The memory of the atrocities suffered by the Jews, the Tatar Muslims of Crimea, and the Orthodox population seems to have been transmitted from generation to generation, along with the poison of hatred. Crossing checkpoints, Entell moves from the loyalist Ukrainians to the pro-Russian separatists. Each side is in turn engaging, passionate, and certain they are on the right side -- that God and history are with them.
Slowly, Entell's story becomes transformed into the story of an entire people, lost in its own madness. In sincerely exploring the diversity of the Ukrainian people amidst an atmosphere of senseless, destructive violence, Like Dew in the Sun transcends cultural, religious and national differences to uncover the deeper bonds that unite us all.
108 minutes, in Ukrainian and Russian with English narration and English subtitles. 2016
