"The issues facing these three young individuals are akin to the issues facing various groups of Chinese people. Not only should the three find their own way out, but a channel should be found for various groups on the social ladder in China, which are isolated and without any intersection in between, to communicate with each other. This is the exact purpose of A Way Out." -- China Youth Daily

A heartfelt exploration of the lives of three young people, from different classes and regions in China, who are looking to find their way, their purpose, and their future in China’s emergent modern society.

Ma Baijuan, an enthusiastic 12-year-old girl from a remote village in Gansu Province, travels miles each day to attend her primary school, a single room school with just five students.  She hopes to one day attend college in Beijing, find a good job, and help her family build a well to solve their water crisis.

Yuan Hanhan, a girl from a well-off Beijing family, dropped out of high school at 17 only to spend her days watching movies and reading at home.  After a few years dabbling around, she decides to apply for art school in Germany and perhaps stay in Europe.

Xu Jia, a 19 year old from Hubei Province, toils away studying to take the national college entrance exam for the third year in a row.  His mother, a poor farmer from the countryside, has rented a small 20-square-meter room near the school, where she, Jia, and his younger brother live in order to focus on the exam.

As it explores six years in the lives of these three adolescents as they begin to enter adult life, A Way Out proposes their realities as a snapshot of the emerging generation in China.

94 minutes, in Mandarin with English subtitles.
Directed by: Cherelle Zheng (Zheng Qiong)
