“This poetic visual essay delves into the rhythms of life, cars, and commerce on a 35-mile stretch of Interstate 110, California’s oldest freeway.” - Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

"This journey from San Pedro to Pasadena is a deftly crafted tone poem about life in Los Angeles.  Comparable not in content but in aspiration to a film like "Los Angeles Plays Itself", this is a love letter to the metropolis told through a time lapse along 35 miles of the oldest freeway in California.  Viewers watch as demographics change, landscapes change, classes change, all while seeing what connects them all." - Criterion Collection (Cast)

"Might best be described as a ‘freeway symphony’...a highly crafted audio-visual artefact both composed out of and documenting a piece of urban infrastructure, taking the pulse of an urban artery." - The Architecture Foundation (UK)

Communion Los Angeles is a visual essay that traces California’s oldest freeway, the 110, as it courses from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, defining and dividing the communities it is designed to serve.  Viewing the 35-miles of blacktop as both infrastructure and public architecture, this equinoctial journey highlights dichotomies of mobility, technology and urban space in a complex, socially-stratified metropolis.

68 Minutes | English.

Directed by Adam R. Levine and Peter Bo Rappmundd
