“This epic traversal of the Mexican-American border ...[forges] a provocative politics of its own, based on notions and instruments of surveillance." – Jonathan Rosenbaum, British Film Institute's Sight & Sound Magazine
With approximately 350 million crossings per year, the Mexico-US border is the most frequently traversed international border in the world. Beginning where the Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico and working its way backward, step-by-step, all the way to the Pacific Ocean, Tectonics explores the landscapes and physical qualities of this 2,000-mile border. Laden with layers of meaning, its images highlight striking contrasts between each side of the border, and tensions between stunning natural environments and man-made structures that seem to impose their will on them. This observational work achieves the feat of bearing witness to a boundary that shapes lives, while evoking an atmosphere of being watched.
