"Fuses complex soundscapes with an intensely poetic visual language to evoke the violence that for centuries has been ingrained in the Paraguayan landscape." - MoMA

Straddling the line between documentary and poetic fiction, Memory Exercises reveals the personal fallout of a prominent opponent to Paraguay's military dictatorship, as unearthed in the country's Archives of Terror.

Between 1954 and 1989, Paraguay suffered under the longest dictatorship in Latin America.  General Stroessner's anti-communist regime, supported by US intelligence agencies in connection with Operation Condor, systematically imprisoned or murdered alleged leftist political threats.

Among them was Agustín Goiburú, leader of the opposition to Stroessner and architect of a failed assassination attempt, who disappeared in 1976 in Paraná, Argentina, where he had been living in exile.

35 years later, Goiburú's three children, Rolando, Jazmin, and Rogelio, now head of Paraguay’s commission for historical memory and reparation, return to the place of exile and begin an intimate memory exercise.

Memory Exercises works to restore the singularity of a clandestine childhood, and serve as a window into the repressed history of a country.
